Alice is the strong lead female character in Tim Burtons Alice in Wonderland, although it is not an original story Burton twists the characters to make them even more quirky than they were already. This is Burtons first film with a title female character. To compare this with Edward Scissorhands Burton has taken more of an interest in developing her as a character than he did with Jen. You could compare the scenes where Jen is angry with Jim and doesn't put up much of a fight although this is partially down to the script the character doesn't say the lines with enough emphasis or wit to make you think she is a strong character. comparing this to Alice's argument about whether shes the right alice through out the film, the character is written quite sweet and kind Burton makes her character strong and kind.

Roles of women in Tim Burton films
Edward Scissorhands (1990)
The mother is a strong figure however she is thought of as a third character rather than second, the second most would say is the love interest who is not a strong woman

Planet of the Apes

Sweeney Todd
The role of Mrs Lovett is although not a title role she is undoubtedly a main character.

Alice in wonderland
The role of Alice is a title role and the main character this is a development from his early work only having male main characters and title roles with women being the side role, although the title role of Sweeney todd is a male role mrs Lovett plays just as an important part.

This is a trailer for enchanted a film where a woman is looking for her to be husband and then realises she loves another man and then proceeds to marry him instead.

Alice In Wonderland fairy tale?
The feminist revisionism is clunky and very American. "This is my
dream," Alice declares, "I'll decide where it goes from here" – which
sounds less like a statement of empowerment than like a virtual-world
gamer insisting on the right to plot her own interactive narrative. - http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/films/reviews/alice-in-wonderland-tim-burton-105-mins-pg-1917295.html
This review talks about the strong character of Alice how she isn't choosing what she wants to do but wants to 'plot her own interactive narrative' which women in real life cant do. This makes it more of a fairy tale story.

This is a link to the scene in dark shadows where Barnabus and Angie meet again she seems a strong powerful witch, but she is only doing it so she and him can be together again, obsessing over it much like Mrs Lovett in Sweeney Todd.

These are links to Helena Bonham Carter playing Mrs Lovett in Sweeney Todd. She is playing a women who in one link seems smart strong but in the second link she is talking about how she just wants to get married. Many of Tim Burtons female characters appear to be unique and quirky but want the same thing to get married, like in The Nightmare Before Christmas the character of Sally only tries to stop Jack from messy things up because she is in love with him.
