Why Edward Scissorhands is one of my focus films

I chose Edward Scissorhands as one of my focus films because even though it has Edward the main characters name in the title it is just as much about the family and people that surround him, mostly housewives. Just after Edward (Johnny Depp) is brought home by Peg (Dianne Wiest) there is a scene where all the housewives are chatting about him on the corner of a road and as soon as the cars start coming down the road (presumably their husbands) the women scatter then as soon as the cars leave off again in the morning the women walk out and start talking and scheming. But they all have to be home for their husbands, Peg is the only one who appears to have a job even if she doesn't have much success until she meets Edward.

She is a strong female character proven by the fact that she is determined to do well in her job and does go right into the house and doesn't get scared until she meets Edward. However determined she is she needs Edward to get the attention from the head Avon lady. Edward is a weaker character, Burton makes this obvious by the make up which makes him look surprised by everything and Depp uses a quiet slightly high pitched voice which almost questions what he says showing that his character was 'trapped by his incomplete body'1.

Why Sweeney Todd is one of my focus films

I chose Sweeney Todd as one of my focus films because it is a musical and the way Burton has directed the songs means he can be more obvious with how the characters are feeling and what they are feeling towards eachother.

In the song 'My friends' Burton has Bonham-Carter (Mrs Lovett) in the shadows of Depp (Sweeney Todd) and always standing behind him which shows he has the power in their relationship, 'It's a tragic love story'1. Although Mrs. Lovett is smart Bonham-Carter uses a soft high voice and singing voice which you can hear in 'My Friends'.

Budget of $50,000,000 Opening Weekend £4,525,246 (UK)

Why Alice In Wonderland is one of my focus films

I chose Alice In Wonderland (2010) as one of my focus films because it is the first live action film directed by Tim Burton which has a female characters name as part of the title. If you look at the main women (including dormouse) they are all very strong and are determined to get what they want. However the main female character isn't as strong as the others are and until she is the other characters call her the wrong Alice.

In the scene where Alice falls down the rabbit hole she has just ran away from a marriage proposal, the fact that she couldn't say no to it and had to run away shows she wasn't a strong character at this point. Burton also makes her look weaker by having Mia Wasikowska breathing heavily and showing other signs of having a panic attack. Luckily she over comes being frightened, weak and not believing in the surreal just before she 'hurtles towards her appointment on the good-verses-evil battlefield'1.

In the fight scene she is going against the Red Queen played by Helena Bonham-Carter who has an 'obsession with beheading people'2. Although she appears a strong character she is one of Burtons only characters with a real insecurity, her big head, which Bonham-Carter and Burton have made have a shrill and squeaky voice which contrasts with her status. Unlike The White Queen (Anne Hathaway) who speaks softly which complements her character as she could have power but doesn't.

Budget $200,000,000

Why Planet Of the Apes is my main focus film.

I am researching the role of women in films directed by Tim Burton, if they have changed and if they have why they have.

I chose The Planet Of The Apes (2001) as my main film to research because it was Burton's first big budget sci-fi film and the two lead female characters were so different to eachother, also after using helena bonham carter in this film he then went on to use her in a lot of his other films. This leads to people wondering if it is because they are together or whether he just likes her as an actress as he likes Johnny Depp as an actor.
Although Bonham-Carter Plays an ape there is still a sexual element to her. In the scene where Leo (Mark Wahlberg) is saying goodbye to everyone, there is a high angled shot on Ari to make her look more vunerable to the audience while she is saying that Leo means a lot to her. He then promptly kisses her. Burton had made her a strong character until this point. Estella Warren playing Daena also kisses him, she kisses him after watching him kiss Ari this puts her in a bad light, though not technically as although she is playing a primative human she still has 'access to lipstick, eyeliner pencil and other crucial styling aids'1. This does kill any type of feeling that it doesn't matter if the lead female character is pretty, ugly or an ape to be a love interest.

With an estimated budget of $100000000 it only made just over half of that in the opening weekend in the USA $68532960

Planet of the apes

The two main female roles Ari (Helena Bonham-Carter) and Daena (Estella Warren) Are very different but still working together for the same purpose.

Ari
One of the first shots of her is just her looking out, in an attempt to make an ape look attractive. But apart from that shot she isn't really portrayed in a sexual way. But just defying of her dad; Helena Bonham-Carter plays her as a good willed character but you don't she her devotion until she takes buys Leo and Daena. Although Bonham-Carter doesn't play her with any disbelief to her cause (humans and apes are equal) but you do feel that she has put some doubt in it until they get to the ship and when she gets branded. Burton uses the brand as a symbol to show they are equal.

Daena
She is a strong character who from the beginning would do anything for her family. However her strong character is underminded by the fact that although she is wild and wouldn't have access to beauty treatments she still manages to have perfect hair where as other wild humans don't.  Another thing that makes her stand out is that she wears a low cut and short piece of material. Due to the fact that she doesn't say much it is hard to see how strong willed she when she just runs in a small piece of material.

Ari's character is more like Burtons later female roles and is very strong and doesn't actually need Leo's help but is helping him. Daena on the other hand does need his help. Towards the end when Leo is leaving he kisses Ari, which makes sense as they were very close through out the film. But there is also a kiss between Daena and Leo which just makes her character look more weak as though maybe she wasn't helping him for her family but  just for him.
